LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Oakland Originals
Land Acknowledgement
As storytellers who have been honored to live on this land and learned from this community for over 30 years, we acknowledge that we do our work on the ancestral and present-day homeland of the Ohlone, Muwekma, and Confederated Villages of Lisjan peoples.
Our commitment to this land and water, its animals and people is woven into our work. We use documentaries to honor the stories of those who live in our community and to inspire care and mutual support. Our ongoing action is to use our platform to not only acknowledge the original peoples of this land, but to actively direct attention and support to the Ohlone, Muwekma, and Confederated Villages of Lisjan peoples who are here today, so that they may continue their vital role as stewards and culture-keepers. This is our responsibility to this place.
We are inspired by the work of the following native and indigenous neighbors who live, work and practice within the lands where we make our documentaries:
- Katie Dorame – Visual Artist
- Corrina Gould and Johnella LaRose – Co-Founders of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust
- Angelica Trimble-Yanu – Designer and visual artist
- Tommy Orange – Author
- Crystal Wapepah – Chef and Restauranteur
- Martin Waukazoo – Visionary health leader
We know there are many more. We would love to add to this list. Please send us your suggestions via our contact page!
Please consider supporting the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust’s work of rematriation, returning Indigenous land to Indigenous people, by paying a Shuumi Land Tax.
The Shuumi Land Tax is a voluntary annual contribution that non-Indigenous people living on traditional Lisjan Ohlone territory make to support the critical work of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust.
